Basic Dental Insurance Policies and Dental Savings Plans

These types of insurances are designed to provide savings and or discounts for the insured or business. Basic dental provides core benefits such as preventive care. Savings plans are designed to save on certain benefits or procedures. Both are great options depending on your needs.

Your next option is a plan that provides preventive care and then it has coverage for restorative care. The difference being of course more benefits mean more in monthly premiums. They all have limitations built into the policy so you need to read the fine print and ask a few questions.
In Boise and Idaho, we have a number of great options for coverage. Here are a few of the most popular carriers.

Delta Dental: Probably the largest Dental Insurance provider in Idaho. I have my personal plan with them for many years and they do a good job.
Humana: A very large national insurance carrier. They provide a number of products and services with one being dental coverage.
Ameritas: Another large national provider.

Basic Dental Coverages What Do They Cover

We are lucky living here in Idaho and the Treasure Valley as we have great access to dental care. Below is what most basic plans cover.
  • Preventive care and checkups
  • Cleanings and usually annual set of bite-wing x-rays.
Your plan may cover other services such as fluoride applications, sealants, mouth guards or other oral appliances. Just ask your agent or the company and they can explain the coverage thoroughly.

And that’s it – you don’t get coverage for fillings, extractions or deep cleanings. Most dental insurance plans do cover these sorts of treatments at 80% of the cost.

Basic policies typically don’t cover:
  • Root canals
  • Crowns
  • Bridges
  • Dentures or Orthodontics

A traditional dental plan will typically cover up to 50% of the cost of those services and sometimes up to 20% for braces.

Basic Dental Insurance is usually offered through the employer as either a paid or voluntary benefit, depending on how they set it up. The benefits of have annual x rays and cleanings twice a year typically make this plan very affordable to most families.

They vary in pricing but you can expect somewhere in the range of $20 a month per person enrolled on the plan. A full or restorative plan typically will be in the $40 a month range depending on the features and benefits.

Basic Dental plans may be worth the money if:
  • Your employer pays for the coverage
  • You have great teeth, just need cleaning and checkups
But if you have a dental health issue you need to look into a Dental Savings Plan or a Standard, Restorative policy.

Dental Savings Plans

A Dental Savings plan you will typically pay a membership fee on an annual basis. What you get in return is discount savings on dental procedures. If you have a basic plan lets say your employer pays for, then this may be a great way to supplement the coverage.

I personally have had two root canals now and I paid half of the bill. That’s how my personal plan works, it was a big saving and very glad I had the coverage. Don’t forget oral health is very important to overall health, especially as we age.

Tips For Choosing A Dental Insurance Company

With any insurance, there is always a lot of information to consider before purchase. In our experience almost all of the companies we work with really try to do a good job. It truly comes down sometimes to pricing and benefits offered. Of course, you want a company that has a good reputation and a good network of Dentists in your area.

Some things to consider for a great plan are:
  • Good reputation
  • Affordable plan
  • Coverage for a range of treatments and benefits
  • Size of the provider network, this is probably one of the most important items as you may have a long time dentist and you want to continue to see them. Most insurance companies have online portals where you can actually search for your dentist.

Types of standard or traditional dental insuarance policies. The most common plan that you may have heard about are PPO and DHMO plans. This is just to name the most popular as there are a number of others to choose from. They typically provide coverage for preventative care like annual checkups and cleanings. Then for the other procedures like fillings and extractions, root canal, crowns or dentures you may end up with a fee schedule. This means they will pay up to a percent of the bill and then a cap on the annual out of pocket.

Some plans you will find will show 50% of a root canal up to a limit of $1000 or $1,500 per year. It’s not 100% coverage but all insurance works this way for the most part and dental policies have over the years really turned more into a catastrophic type of plan.

Thank you for visiting our website! Our agency offers a number of different programs for all types of dental insurance programs. We service all of Boise, the Treasure Valley and Idaho.
