Chris Antrim • Sep 18, 2022

Life Insurance can be confusing and a pain, but it doesn't have to!

Buying a life insurance policy could either be a major relief or a major headache for you. Our hope is that the information below in this article should provide you some knowledge in helping you know a few things to be aware of and help you purchase the correct plan.

Tips In Buying Life Insurance

First, think about your total debt. You want the policy to be able to cover your final expenses, including your mortgage, other loans, and your child's school tuition. These are truly the top reasons my clients buy a policy and of course business solvency.

How much do you need? When you are trying to determine the appropriate amount of coverage to purchase with your plan, remember to calculate coverage for both fixed and ongoing expenses, don’t just think about today’s needs. You need to consider for future years how much may be appropriate. We can help you with this calculation. Life insurance is also used to pay one-time expenses like estate taxes or funeral costs, both of which may be quite high.

Your fun hobbies or occupation could affect the rates you pay monthly. Pilots, scuba diving, race car driving, etc. These are all a whole bunch of fun but there is some risk involved. The underwriters will question you thoroughly and be prepared to be completely honest with them. Foreign travel is also another issue that could affect rates. We can question you before ever applying for a policy and try to determine what the cost may be so you have an idea of what you may be looking at in the way of costs!

There are many ways for you to purchase a policy these days. I personally rarely even meet my clients anymore in person. With online meetings and the internet, it just makes sense to value everyone’s time and work remotely over the phone and online. I have a system in place where you can do an online quote, apply for and sign right over the internet. I like this system for sure, and honestly, if you are reading this article you probably have already given buying a policy much thought. But you could also use a financial planner. Financial planners typically work solely on a feed base level as well. They may refer you out to someone that they work with like an insurance agent or a bank.

I always recommend to my clients that they talked to a number of people. They can speak to an insurance agent that is a broker I don't, or someone who works for a captive company like Allstate or State Farm. Get multiple quotes from multiple sources to ask lots of questions that will always work in your favor. When it comes to life insurance your premium will play a big part in the policy that you decide to move forward with. With that being said typically an independent broker agent like myself can shop the market on your behalf to try to get you the best rates.

Types Of Life Insurance

There are basically two types of policies in the marketplace today.

  • Term life insurance and permanent life insurance.it really depends on your goals, planning, and budget that will help you determine which type of plan to move forward with. In this article, I'm not going to go into the difference between term and permanent you should just really have this conversation with an agent or an advisor. They will be the best to help you determine which would be a good solution for you your family or business

  • Whole life insurance is a type of permanent life insurance. It is the original life insurance policy, but there are now many different types of life insurance available. Whole life insurance is the most basic and simple type of permanent life insurance. A whole life insurance policy will last for the insured person's entire lifetime, as long as premiums are paid. The death benefit and cash value of the policy will never decrease. The main advantage of whole life insurance is that it does not expire, as long as the premiums are paid. This can give peace of mind to policyholders and their families, knowing that they will be taken care of financially if something happens to the insured person. Another advantage of whole life insurance is that it builds cash value over time.

Remember that depending on the type of plan you apply for. there possibly could be an exam with a paramedical company extensive health questionnaire and a background check. This is all normal practice for the life insurance companies. If they're insuring you for $1,000,000 they just want to make sure that your health is the way you say it is and to be quite honest that you were a good investment for the company.

Just a couple of tips now for after you have applied for your policy and now you need to schedule your exam. If you don't have an exam that needs to be completed that's called a non-medical type of policy. This is usually only available for a term life plan. I recommend that you do 12-hour fasting before your exam. It's always better to do your exam in the morning on an empty stomach a piece of toast if you need it and maybe some black coffee and water. For sure nothing heavy for a big breakfast. Lab work just seems to come back better this way. Don't worry if you end up working with me I'll coach you through the whole process so that you can try to get the best rates absolutely available.

Of course lastly, it's always better to get a life insurance policy as long as you can for term if not a permanent policy when you're as young as possible. your rates will be better for sure life insurance is underwritten on mortality and a healthier you are the better as well which just correlates at a younger age.

Why Use An Insurance Broker

If you're decided to purchasing life insurance, you might need an expert and knowledgeable insurance broker, you can opt to choose to go with independent insurance agent or online broker, through their online website. There are many different options you can choose. If you want to save time browsing from different carriers and plans, you can purchase directly through an insurance company like Chris Antrim Insurance here in Idaho.
