Medicare Supplement Plans, also called Medigap plans, are designed to help cover some of the costs that Medicare doesn't pay. These plans are offered by private insurance companies and can help pay for things like co-pays, deductibles, and coinsurance. There are 10 different types of Medigap plans available, each with a different set of benefits.

While Medicare Supplement Plans can be a great way to help cover some of the costs not paid for by Medicare, it's important to know that these plans do not cover everything. For example, most Medigap plans do not cover long-term care, dental care, or vision care. Additionally, these plans have premiums that must be paid on top of the monthly Medicare Part B premium.

Things To Know About Medicare Supplements

  • You must first have original Medicare Part A & Part B, then your policy picks up its share of the costs
  • This plan is different from a medicare advantage plan. Speak to an agent to get clarification.
  • You would purchase a policy from an insurance company. You then pay a premium based on factors monthly.
  • The policy only affords coverage for one individual.
  • Insurance company and agent must be licensed in the state you live to sell the plans
  • When the policy is approved it is guaranteed renewable, which means you pay the premium and the company cannot cancel your plan.
  • You must purchase a prescription drug plan separately
  • Talk to a good agent to get clarification

New Medigap Birthday Rule In Idaho

Medicare & Health Insurance Specialist

Idaho’s laws and rules for Medicare Supplement policies have changed. The Idaho legislature approved legislation to provide additional options and consumer protections for Idaho seniors. The Idaho Department of Insurance (“the Department”) published a temporary rule on November 3 related to Medicare Supplement policies in accordance with Senate Bill 1143, signed by Governor Little on April 22, 2021. The rule proposed went through negotiated rulemaking as required.

The rule, IDAPA 18.04.10, was published November 3 in the Administrative Bulletin Volume 21-11, and includes two major changes effective after February 28, 2022:

  1. Medicare Supplement policyholders may change their insurance company and/or plan annually regardless of health conditions during a 63-day enrollment period beginning on the policyholder’s birthday; and
  2. Premium rates for new Medicare Supplement policies (including when changing insurance companies) will no longer be based on the age of the applicant. This is referred to as “community rating.”

The proposed rule also prohibits charging application fees, higher premium rates based on the method of payment, and other unfair trade practices.

It is important to know that current Medicare Supplement plans are guaranteed renewable, and current policies will continue unless a change is requested by the policyholder. These rule changes provide flexibility to current Medicare Supplement policyholders who wish to change their policy, but no change is required. After February 28, 2022, existing Medicare Supplement policyholders may choose to shop for comparable community-rated coverage starting the day of their birthday. Read the article here!

Boise Medicare Supplement Insurance

The basics of how Med Supp’s work… There can be a lot of confusion about the different types of Medicare insurance is when you are available and ready to retire. Let’s touch on the basics and the coverage’s that you get with them. These policies, help pay for some of the cost that you incur that your Original Medicare does not cover.

An example of what it would possibly cover is your co-payments, your deductibles, and coinsurance. Typically you would purchase a policy direct for an insurance company or an agent. The Government does not administer or sell these policies.

Supplement Policies Coverage

Medicare Supplement policies typically do not cover long term care costs or private duty nursing. You would want to look into a long term care insurance policy for that. Also, they generally do not cover vision, dental, hearing aids, and eyeglasses or exams. Other choices for coverage would be a Medicare Advantage policy.

Medicare Supplement Companies

There are a number of great insurance companies that offer coverage in the state of Idaho. The best way to find out the best plan for you based upon your current health is to work with an agent that specializes in this type of coverage.

You have national carriers like Cigna, Aetna, Humana, Mutual of Omaha and local companies such as Blue Cross, Regence Blue Shield, Pacific Source and Select Health.

There can be new companies with different options when you are looking for a program to enroll in, but our office and staff will help you with finding the best options.

Medicare open enrollment for ID residents starts October 15th until December 7. We have agents all over the state ready to help you with quotes, reviews and forms. For 2020 coverage, open enrollment will run from October 15, 2019, to December 7, 2019.

During this time the enrollment period or (AEP) you can make changes to the plan choices you have selected.

You may find great coverage with Regence Medigap or Medicare supplement plans.

Idaho Medicare Resources

Of course, you can go to Medicare.gov for a wealth of resources and information. Call them at 1-800-663-4227. The Idaho Department of Insurance has help for you as well which is SHIBA "senior health insurance benefit advisors".

Here is a link to the website https://doi.idaho.gov/shiba/medicare_glance and their contact number is 1-800-247-4422.

Lastly, depending on your financial situation, you may need to contact Medicaid, here is the link for Idaho http://healthandwelfare.idaho.gov/Default.aspx?TabId=123.

Medicare Part D

This is the prescription drug plan for insured that are on Medicare. It is not mandatory to have a Part D policy but there are things to consider if you do not elect coverage. Please review with one of our brokers or agents all of your options. This plan covers your medications that are prescribed for you by your doctor. If you elect to go with a Medicare Supplement policy you must purchase a Part D plan on your own and separately. If you have a Medicare Advantage policy some companies include the prescription plan with the policy and some do not. Don't worry we will help you with all of these decisions to make sure you get the right policy.

Medicare Supplement Plan F & G

These are two of the most popular Medigap plans. They are very similar in coverage and how they work. Both offer you coverage for most of the nine medical issues that will be insured by a supplement policy. The primary difference is Plan F covers the Part B deductible and plan g does not. There will of course be a difference in the monthly premiums. We have found that sometimes it may be best for you to cover you own deductible as you may save in monthly premiums over the year. This is especially true if you are currently healthy.
If you are under age 65 and do not qualify for Medicare you may need your own individual or short term health policy. Call the office today for a no-obligation quote or review of your current plan.  We serve Boise, Nampa, Meridian, Caldwell as well as the Treasure Valley and all of ID.

It may get very confusing when it comes to what policy should I choose when It’s time to select an option. In this article, we’ve been reviewing Medicare policies but the other option is called a Medicare Advantage. This is another way for you to get coverage when you go on Medicare. There are vast differences when it comes to the pricing and benefits of how they work. So that’s why it’s very important to make sure that you understand the differences as you review your coverage and options.

Supplemental policies work alongside your Original Medicare. You purchase this insurance through a private insurance company and basically it picks up the difference that your Medicare does not pay for. Upon approval for a Medigap plan it will be issued with a monthly premium. Remember with this type of plan the insured is still responsible for purchasing a prescription drug plan which would be a separate cost. You cannot have a supplement and Advantage plan at the same time you have to have either one or the other.

Medicare Advantage plans are administered by hmos, ppos, private fee-for-service, or special need plans or point of service. That’s the name a few but not all-inclusive every State and county is different. This could end up being a major decision for you when you’re ready to purchase a policy. You will definitely want to talk to and informed licensed agent, I prefer independent agents. Independents they can shop the market for the absolute best plan available for you. I do like supplements as you can control cost via a monthly payment but that’s my personal opinion. Advantage Plans will work better for some insureds due to their circumstances or budget.
