Vision Insurance Options (VSP & IMED)

We quote and enroll with the major vision networks most Boise residents ask for:

  • VSP – Widely used national network with strong Boise provider access; generous frame/contact lens allowances depending on tier.
  • MED (often written EyeMed) – Large, retail‑friendly network; competitive lens options and discounts on extras like anti‑reflective or blue‑light coatings.

What matters when choosing:

  • Network fit: Your current optometrist/optical shop in‑network? We verify before you buy.
  • Allowances & copays: Frame or contact lens allowance; exam copay; frequency (12/12/24, etc.).
  • Lens upgrades: Progressives, photochromic, high‑index—know the real add‑on costs.
  • Family usage: Kids using sports goggles or frequent replacements? Choose richer allowances if replacements are likely.

Dental + Vision Together: When It Makes Sense

  • Families with kids (breakage/replacement risk and orthodontic needs).
  • Self‑employed pros who want predictable costs and tax‑efficient benefits.
  • Boise employers adding low‑cost, high‑perceived‑value benefits to a group plan.

Tip: Pair dental/vision with accident or critical illness for broader cost protection; we can bundle where it makes sense.

Dental Insurance Options (Blue Cross of Idaho, Delta Dental, Emeritas, Allstate)

We help you compare plan types and networks side‑by‑side:

  • PPO plans (most common): Lower out‑of‑pocket in‑network and flexibility to see out‑of‑network dentists.
  • DHMO/Pre‑paid (where available): Lower premiums, limited networks, fixed copays for services.
  • Indemnity (rare): See any dentist; percentage reimbursements apply.

Carriers we work with in Boise & Idaho:

  • Blue Cross of Idaho – Strong Idaho networks and familiar branding for families and employers.
  • Delta Dental – Extensive dentist participation and a wide range of PPO plan designs.
  • Emeritas (Ameritas) – Popular individual dental/vision combos with competitive allowances.
  • Allstate – Dental and vision options with simple plan designs and bundling opportunities.

What matters when choosing:

  • Waiting periods: Major services (crowns, root canals) often have a wait—unless waived by prior coverage.
  • Annual max: Typical caps range by plan; pick a higher max if major work is likely.
  • Preventive coverage: Cleanings/exams/x‑rays usually covered at or near 100% in‑network.
  • Orthodontics: Not always included; verify age limits and lifetime maximums before enrolling.

Typical Plan Structures (What to Expect)

Vision (VSP/IMED)

  • Exam copay (often modest), lenses covered annually; frame or contact allowance on a 12–24 month schedule.
  • Discounts on second pairs and lens upgrades vary by tier.

Dental (Blue Cross, Delta, Emeritas, Allstate)

  • Preventive (exam/cleaning/x‑rays): highest coverage in‑network.
  • Basic (fillings, simple extractions): cost‑sharing after deductible.
  • Major (crowns, implants, root canals): higher cost‑sharing and potential waiting periods.
  • Annual maximum applies; choose higher when major work is anticipated.

Boise‑Specific Tips

  • Verify your dentist/optometrist: We check Boise, Meridian, Nampa, Caldwell, Eagle, Kuna, Star, and Middleton providers.
  • Multi‑clinic families: If parents and kids use different clinics, we’ll test both networks before you choose.
  • Employer groups: Adding dental/vision typically costs a fraction of medical and boosts employee satisfaction quickly.
  • Medicare clients: Dental/vision often work best as standalone policies alongside your Medicare plan; we’ll align benefits to avoid overlap.

Basic Dental Coverages What Do They Cover

We are lucky living here in Idaho and the Treasure Valley as we have great access to dental care. Below is what most basic plans cover.

  • Preventive care and checkups
  • Cleanings and usually annual set of bite-wing x-rays.

Your plan may cover other services such as fluoride applications, sealants, mouth guards or other oral appliances. Just ask your agent or the company and they can explain the coverage thoroughly.

And that’s it – you don’t get coverage for fillings, extractions or deep cleanings. Most dental insurance plans do cover these sorts of treatments at 80% of the cost.

Basic policies typically don’t cover:

  • Root canals
  • Crowns
  • Bridges
  • Dentures or Orthodontics

Basic Dental Insurance is usually offered through the employer as either a paid or voluntary benefit, depending on how they set it up. The benefits of have annual x rays and cleanings twice a year typically make this plan very affordable to most families.

They vary in pricing but you can expect somewhere in the range of $20 a month per person enrolled on the plan. A full or restorative plan typically will be in the $40 a month range depending on the features and benefits.

Tips For Choosing A Dental Insurance Company

With any insurance, there is always a lot of information to consider before purchase. In our experience almost all of the companies we work with really try to do a good job. It truly comes down sometimes to pricing and benefits offered. Of course, you want a company that has a good reputation and a good network of Dentists in your area.

Some things to consider for a great plan are :

  • Good reputation
  • Affordable plan
  • Coverage for a range of treatments and benefits
  • Size of the provider network, this is probably one of the most important items as you may have a long time dentist and you want to continue to see them. Most insurance companies have online portals where you can actually search for your dentist.

Types of standard or traditional dental insurance policies. The most common plan that you may have heard about are PPO and DHMO plans. This is just to name the most popular as there are a number of others to choose from. They typically provide coverage for preventative care like annual checkups and cleanings. Then for the other procedures like fillings and extractions, root canal, crowns or dentures you may end up with a fee schedule. This means they will pay up to a percent of the bill and then a cap on the annual out of pocket.

Some plans you will find will show 50% of a root canal up to a limit of $1000 or $1,500 per year. It’s not 100% coverage but all insurance works this way for the most part and dental policies have over the years really turned more into a catastrophic type of plan.

Thank you for visiting our website! Chris Antrim Insurance Agency offers a number of different programs for all types of dental insurance programs. We service all of Boise, the Treasure Valley and Idaho. You can obtain quotes right online and when you are ready to discuss coverage let us know.
