What Is Medicare Plan N?
Medicare Plan N is a Medigap plan.
It is not Medicare Advantage.
Plan N works with Original Medicare and helps pay some of the costs Original Medicare does not pay.
Original Medicare pays first.
Then Plan N may help pay some remaining Medicare-approved costs according to standardized Medigap rules.
How Plan N Works With Original Medicare
To use Plan N, you generally need Original Medicare Part A and Part B.
You continue to pay your Medicare Part B premium.
You also pay the Plan N premium.
If you need prescription drug coverage, you usually review a separate Part D plan.

Why People Compare Plan N
People often compare Plan N because it may have a lower monthly premium than Plan G.
That can be attractive for people who want Original Medicare provider flexibility, want a Medigap plan, are comfortable with some copays, want to compare premium savings, do not want Medicare Advantage networks, travel or split time between locations, and are comparing Plan G and Plan N side by side.
Plan N is not automatically the lowest-cost option overall.
Plan N Copays
Plan N pays 100% of the Part B coinsurance except for copays for some office visits and some emergency room visits.
These copays are part of the Plan N tradeoff.
People who see doctors often should compare the premium savings against possible copays.
Do not assume Plan N will always cost less overall.
Part B Excess Charges
Plan N does not cover Medicare Part B excess charges.
An excess charge may happen when a provider does not accept Medicare assignment and charges more than the Medicare-approved amount, within allowed limits.
Not every provider charges excess charges.
Still, this should be understood before choosing Plan N.
What Plan N Helps Pay
Plan N helps pay many Original Medicare cost-sharing amounts.
This may include certain Part A and Part B coinsurance, hospital costs, skilled nursing facility coinsurance, hospice coinsurance or copays, and other standardized Medigap benefits.
Keep this simple and consumer-friendly.
Do not create a detailed benefit chart unless Chris asks for one.
What Plan N Does Not Cover
Plan N does not cover everything.
Plan N generally does not include:
- Part B deductible
- Part B excess charges
- Certain office visit copays
- Certain emergency room copays
- Stand-alone retail prescription drug coverage
- Routine dental
- Routine vision
- Routine hearing
- Long-term care
- Most custodial care
- Private-duty nursing
Plan N should be paired with a Part D review if the client needs drug coverage.
Plan N and Part D Prescription Coverage
Plan N does not include Part D prescription drug coverage.

Many people with Plan N buy a separate Part D plan.
Part D should be reviewed based on exact prescriptions, dosage, pharmacy, formulary, tiers, deductible, prior authorization, step therapy, and quantity limits.

Plan N vs Plan G
Plan N and Plan G are both common Medicare Supplement options.
Plan G generally has broader cost-sharing protection.
Plan N may have a lower premium but includes certain copays and does not cover Part B excess charges.
The right choice depends on premium difference, doctor usage, comfort with copays, provider billing patterns, travel needs, budget, and carrier rate history.

Plan N vs Medicare Advantage
Plan N and Medicare Advantage work differently.
Plan N works with Original Medicare.
Medicare Advantage is a private plan alternative to Original Medicare.
Plan N may appeal to people who want Medigap and Original Medicare provider flexibility.
Medicare Advantage may appeal to people who want lower premiums, built-in extras, Part D included, or a network-based plan structure.

Plan N Premiums and Rate Changes
Plan N premiums vary by company and applicant.
Pricing may depend on age, ZIP code, tobacco status, household discount, carrier, rating method, application timing, and underwriting status.
Rates can increase over time.
Review more than the starting premium.
When to Buy Plan N
The best time to buy a Medigap plan is usually during your Medigap Open Enrollment period.
Federal Medigap Open Enrollment is generally a 6-month period that starts the first month you have Medicare Part B and are age 65 or older.
During this time, people usually have stronger rights to buy a Medigap plan.
Timing matters.

Underwriting After Medigap Open Enrollment
If you apply for Plan N after your Medigap Open Enrollment period, medical underwriting may apply in many situations.
This means the insurance company may review your health history.
Approval is not guaranteed.
Some situations may create guaranteed issue rights, but rules depend on the situation. Do not assume you can switch into Plan N later without health questions.
How to Compare Plan N Companies
Compare monthly premium, household discount, tobacco rating, rate history, carrier reputation, customer service, underwriting rules, application process, Part D pairing, Plan G alternative, and Medicare Advantage alternative.
The benefits are standardized, but the company and price can still matter.
Questions to Ask Before Choosing Plan N
Ask:
- Am I in my Medigap Open Enrollment window?
- What is the monthly premium?
- How much cheaper is Plan N than Plan G?
- Am I comfortable with copays?
- Do my providers accept Medicare assignment?
- Could excess charges matter?
- Do I need Part D?
- Should I compare Plan G?
- Should I compare Medicare Advantage?
- Could underwriting apply later?
